Tanning Guide

Facts about tanning:

The four main elements we rely on for our lives and well-being are air, water, earth and sunlight.

Take any of these forces away and we quite simply could not exist.

Natural sunlight is the source of all life on earth. It provides energy, warmth and light and has done so for millions of years.

The sun also gives us a sense of well-being, a tan and a healthy feeling about ourselves, which is often associated with good looks, health and success.

Experts claim that sun and sunbeds enhance physical well-being, strengthen the immune system, can lift depression and increase the body's defences. It is also the only source of vitamin D, which improves the body's absorption of calcium, particularly into the bones and can help prevent Osteoporosis. 80% of Psoriasis sufferers show improvement with UV exposure and 70% of patients with SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) show improvement after light treatment.

Do not use a sunbed if:

  • You are under 18.
  • You are taking medicines or drugs which increase sensitivity to UV rays or have or have a medical condition that becomes worse in sunlight.
  • You or anyone in your immediate family have had skin cancer.
  • You have fair, sensitive skin and do not tan in sunlight.
  • You have an excessive number of moles and/or freckles.
  • You have a history of sunburn especially in childhood.
  • If you are pregnant, consult a doctor before use.
  • If in doubt, consult a doctor.

Before you use a sunbed:

  • Make sure you know how to operate it. (emergency stop etc)
  • Remove body and facial cosmetics and jewellery.
  • Remove contact lenses.
  • Do not use outdoor sun lotions or sunscreens.

Whilst on the sunbed:

  • Always wear protective goggles.
  • Don't allow anyone else in the room/cubicle.
  • If you notice any abnormal skin reactions, stop and immediately seek advice.

After using the sunbed:

  • Do not use a sunbed or sunbathe on the same day.
  • Wait at least 48 hours between every sunbed session.
  • You may moisturise your skin.
  • Never exceed the amount of sessions recommended.
  • Take a break between each sunbed course including summer holidays.
  • If you notice at any time: Lumps, sores or unusual moles on your skin, consult a doctor.
