Every skin reacts and tans differently.

Medical experts have identified six skin types.

Skin Type 1

Burns easily and rarely tans. These people most likely have exceptionally fair skin, blue or green eyes, reddish hair and freckles. People with Type 1 skin should not tan indoors or outdoors. Their skin is rarely able to protect them from sunburn.

Skin Type 2

Can tan, but still susceptible to sunburn. These people have fair skin, blue or green eyes, blond to brown hair and sometimes freckles. People with Type 2 skin should be cautious and take precautions to avoid sunburn.

Skin Type 3

Tans fairly easily, but still susceptible to moderate sunburn. These people often have grey to brown eyes, dark blonde to brown hair and generally tan well.

Skin Type 4

Tans rapidly and deeply. These people often have olive colour skin, dark eyes and dark hair. People with type 4 skin tan very well and very seldom burn.

Skin Type 5

Rarely burns and tans easily. These people have dark hair and eyes and are often of Indian descent.

Skin Type 6

Never burns (In the case of regular exposure to sunlight). These people often have very dark skin, deep brown eyes and black hair and are usually of African descent.
